Fillings and crowns
Repairing a tooth with a cavity or a crack, and covering it with a crown when it needs one.
A filling replaces the part of the tooth that was damaged. A crown covers the whole tooth when little of it is left or when it has a crack. The dentist shows you the tooth on an image and explains which of the two makes sense.

What happens at the visit
A filling usually takes one appointment. A crown usually takes two, a few weeks apart while it is made in a lab.
- 01
Step 1: We check the tooth
The dentist checks it and, if needed, orders an X-ray.
- 02
Step 2: We numb the area
We use local anesthesia. You tell us if you feel anything, and we stop.
- 03
Step 3: We repair the tooth
The damaged part is cleaned out and filled, or the tooth is prepared for a crown.
- 04
Step 4: We check your bite
Before you leave, we check that the tooth closes properly against the others.
Comfort, alternatives and aftercare
Comfort
We numb the area before we begin. If you ask, we pause. For people who feel a lot of fear, we go slower.
If you decide to wait
A cavity can grow toward the nerve of the tooth. The dentist explains the options: watch it, fill it or place a crown.
After the visit
The area stays numb for a few hours: wait until it wears off to eat. The tooth may feel sensitive for a few days. If your bite feels high or the soreness grows, call us.
How it is billed
You get the cost in writing before we start. We never quote a price by text or phone before the dentist has seen your case.
How fees work
Questions
How long does a filling or a crown last?
We cannot promise a length of time. It depends on the tooth, how you bite and how you care for it.
What is the filling made of?
The most common is a tooth-colored resin. The dentist explains the options for your case.
Why a crown and not a filling?
When little of the tooth is left or it has a crack, a filling may not be enough. The dentist shows you before she recommends anything.
